CAN's members have regretfully mourned the passing away of Khmer well-known artist and cartoonist Ung Bun Heang. He passed away on February 8th, 2014 at 6:40pm at his resident in Sydney, Australia.

I received a sad news that Mr. Ung Bun Heang aka Sacrava Artist has passed away after a prolong illness. My thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Ung Phiny and family during this difficult time. May his soul rest in peace.

I have never met Mr. Ung Bun Heang in person but I am so touched by his art work especially the drawings about Khmer Rouge and Cambodian current affairs. Even though, I found some of his drawings about Cambodian politics quite extreme, I am so impressed by his critical drawings and philosophy. He was one of the most talented contemporary Cambodian artists. The world has lost a great artist.

In 20012, Mr. Ung Bun Heang donated 90 of his original drawings about Khmer Rouge to the Australian National University. Here is the detail http://goo.gl/E8ftd8

 I have known Bun Heang since 1995..His wife, Kong Phiny came to visit me in USA once in late 1990. He was a cartoonist at "Angkor Thom News Paper in the 70' with Soth Polin. He is 1 month younger than me..And he used to make the cartoons  on my Birthday as gifts.

Lok Phaon Heang has left us a great legacy.

The importance of a good Friend in our life is Just like the importance of our single Heartbeat! It's not visible, But silently supports our Life. May you rest in PEACE, my brother.

He 'll be always in our heart.

I'd had the opportunity to interview him many times in the past and know that he loves his home country so much and he always spoke his mind about Khmer politics that he deeply loves, which can be seen and reflected through his cartoons and arts. In my view, he's made significant contributions to the art industry both in Australia and Cambodia and his work should be recognised and honored. He has donated many of his valued art pieces to the Australian National Gallery in Canberra. I'm sure, he'll be well remembered by his beloved family and those who have came into contact with him.
May he rest in peace!

I remembered being amazed by the political cartoons of Mr. Ung Bun Heang (aka Sacrava) posted on KI-Media during the time when this domain was well perceived. Despite being extremely critical and sarcastic in his cartoons, he was one of very few talented contemporary political cartoonists.

In Cambodia’s capital city, Phnom
Penh, one in every nine households
employs someone to do the
housework.
 
That someone is a child.

Why does child domestic labour exist in Cambodia?
n Cambodia, child domestic labour has been common for a
long time, but it has grown as a result of poverty, rapid
population growth, the movement of people from country
to city, and a weak education system. Today it is widely
accepted by people in all walks of life and often favourably
considered.
Many families, especially in rural areas, think their children will
find a better life if they go to live with another family (often in
the city) and, in exchange, work in their house. Some families
think their son or daughter will be sent to school and will just
help out at the same time. Some families hope the child will
have a better place to live, decent clothes and good food. In
some cases this may be true. But it is more likely that the child,
especially a girl, will have to sacrifice schooling to get the
housework done for other people. And even if the child goes to
school, it is likely she will be too tired to study, be regularly
absent or just drop out because it is too hard to work and study
at the same time. And some children found themselves in a
situation which was so different from what they thought it
would be, and considered themselves trafficked to work in
domestic labour.
 
Child domestic labour is high-risk, because it
happens behind the closed doors of a private home
and no-one can really know what is happening.
 
Cambodia is by no means the only country where children can
be found in domestic labour. Child domestic labour is
widespread across the globe. We do not know enough about
children who toil in their own homes as domestic helpers, often
for long hours and instead of going to school, but we are

beginning to build up a detailed picture of the lives of children
who work in other people’s homes.
We do not include in this children who just lend a helping hand
at home, maybe by washing the dishes after a meal or cleaning
their room from time to time. Taking some responsibility for
helping out at home is a good thing for children; it helps them
to see that they contribute to the family and it teaches them
skills and habits they will use as they get older.
 
Without us knowing, children in domestic labour are
in a very different situation.
They are often
• deprived of the chance to study,
• isolated from their family,
• forced to work long hours,
• with no contract,
• little or no pay and few or no rewards,
• no time off, and
• at risk of sexual harassment and abuse.
They cannot
• negotiate terms,
• insist on medical insurance or
assistance,
• eat together with the house members, or
• set the conditions under which they toil.
They are frequently
• kept in the house and not allowed to go
out,
• exposed to hazardous cleaning
substances or equipment that is too
difficult for them to use,
• shouted at,
• beaten, and
• humiliated.
 
And of course they miss out on the very thing that
will help them escape all this: school and the chance
to prepare a future that is safe, healthy and in which
they will be able to find a decent job, earn money
and choose the life they want.
 
For all these reasons, the International Labour Organization
(ILO) considers that child domestic labour can easily become
one of the worst forms of child labour. Each individual
Member State of the ILO nominates, on the basis of the
country’s realities, the worst forms of child labour it will move
to prohibit and eliminate as a matter of urgency.
 
The Government of Cambodia has included child
domestic labour in its National Plan of Action
against the worst forms of child labour.
 
In 2004, the National Institute of Statistics of Cambodia, as part
of a two-year programme of the ILO’s International Programme
on the Elimination of Child Labour (IPEC), completed the first
detailed survey of child domestic labour in Cambodia’s capital,
Phnom Penh (Child Domestic Worker Survey, Phnom Penh
2003). This was an important step in Cambodia’s efforts to
understand more about the exploited children, their families, the
homes they work in and the conditions they face.

Dear Respected Members;

Please help me to congratulate Pa Chanroeun, our permanent member here, who persuaded great option on Education Reform for the 5th mandate of the government. One of his recommendations I am extremely amazed is "political will, political will, political will".

On other hand, there are many questions rendering towards HE Hang Chuon Naron, our Campro's member, who is the current Minister of the Education Ministry. I think he should have something to say in here as his time is permissible.

Buddhism and the Modernity

Buddhism is about “awakening”, “enlightening”, and “truth”. There are several aspects to talk about Buddhism about its comparability with modern world. While the world has been tremendously changed, the essence of Buddhism has always buddha2bunder2bthe2bbodhi2btree2b22been seen up to date and it is a right responding to those changes. From his effort, Buddha was acknowledged on his cognitive learning and succeeding all knowledge. He enrolled in different courses at schools of thought and he achieved them all.

Finally, he intuitively learned by invading into his personal physical and mental sphere. He achieved them eventually.

The popular knowledge on modern world would be Politics, Economics and Socials.

1. For the political advancement, Buddha pointed out individual dependency. The teaching of Kamma is about adjusting from wrong to right such as action in physical control, mental control and verbal control. But since the primal, people are pertaining their own tendency and belief. It is hard to take away those tendency from them. That why the first mission Buddha advised to his Bhikkhus is to travel near and far, in different way, to teach to the people beautifully and simply from the beginning, to the middle and to the ending for the benefit of many, for the prosperity of mankind….those who have less dust in their eyes will see the Dhamma…you are not in vain in putting an effort.

Or we can say teach them with both reason and visualized example to change the belief and perception in Kamma. Kamma in Buddhism is different from Kamma in Hinduism (god-oriented destiny ព្រហ្មលិខិត) as in Buddhism is (human-oriented destiny មនុស្សលិខិត). From this point of view, the endurance for civil rights and liberty, liberal democracy, and civic engagement etc. have been responding to the teaching of self-centered approach expounded by Lord Buddha 2557 years ago.

2. For economics advancement, the concept of good corporate citizens, or economic of sustainability etc. are just a way Buddha taught long time ago. The simple life of Bhikkhus is the reflective way for the greed of business corporations. The love of nature, mountain and forest Buddha rejoiced the most is the sign of how important to balance between subtraction of natural resources to answer the demands of human beings but it must not be at the brink of destroying human beings. Four necessities introduced by Buddha such as Clothes, Food, Shelter and Medicine are just in need but not in greed.

3. For social advancement, Buddha advocated for larger justice by making yourself enlightenment. There is conundrum of justice interpretation of the present world; but Buddha seems conveyed Nibbana as the absolute justice.
